An Ideal Muslim Youth – Sodomy

Imam Ali bin Abi Talib (as) has said: “There are two things one cannot value them unless one loses them: Youth & Health”

We are looking at the fourth influencing factor in a Youth’s life which is of the Mass Media. There are numerous evils which the Mass Media today is responsible for promoting in a manner which is most appealing to one and all, especially the Youth. Two of such evils discussed in the previous sessions are: Alcoholism & Zinaa (Fornication & Adultery).

The third kind of evil is of al-Liwaat meaning Homosexuality & Lesbianism also refered to as Sodomy.  This means having of sexual relation between members of the same sex. This behaviour is not a new phenomenon and it has been condemned in all revealed Religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Homosexuality goes back to the days of Prophet Lut (as). In short, Lut (as) was the maternal cousin of Prophet Ibrahim (as). His sister Sara was also the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (as). Lut (as) was sent as a prophet to the people of Mutafikaat , a complex of five towns, Sodom being the largest. The people of Mutafikaat were very wicked and niggardly. The road connecting Egypt with Syria went through their towns. Those who travelled on this road had to break their journey and stay in their towns which the inhabitants did not like it. One day Shaytan came to them and taught them homosexuality in order to stop the travellers from taking shelter with them. From then on, they became addicted to this unnatural wickedness. Prophet Lut (as) was sent to warn them but they turned a deaf ear to all his warnings and as a result, they were all destroyed by Allah (SWT).

Although the Mass Media today potrays homosexuality as a natural act, according to Islam, it is a horrible crime which is worse than Zinaa. Reasons for this have been stated in verses 81, 82 and 83 of Suratul-A’raaf:

  1. Homosexuality is an unnatural way of satisfying the sexual instinct, it is therefore an act of Fuhush meaning lewdness and indecency.

“And Lut, when he said to his people: Do you commit a lewdness which no one has ever done in the worlds before you?”

The fact that no one before had done this shameful act, by itself proves that homosexuality is an unnatural act. And from the time of Prophet Lut (as) until today, Sodomy has been in practice but with one big difference: In the past, despite its existence, homosexuality had always been regarded as a pervert sexual behaviour, whereas today, it has been labelled as a natural act and an inborn tendency!

  1. Allah (SWT) has created two different sexes: male and female for each other to satisfy their instincts lawfully and for pro-creation purpose. “God created Adam for Eve and not for Steve”, as the saying goes. People who indulge in Sodomy are enemies of mankind who are going against the law of nature and creating hindrance in the development of human-race. Such people are termed as Qaumun Musrifoon which means wasteful people.

“Verily you satisfy your lust with men instead of women. Nay, you are a wasteful people”.

  1. Sodomy is like a cancerous disease, if allowed to spread, it will spread like wild fire till it engulfs the entire society. And then to put a stop to this will not be easy without Divine intervention.

This was the fate of the people of Lut (as). First, Shaytan led one person to commit this indecency. Later, that person invited others to the same evil. Finally, the crime reached such a gigantic proportion that it was common to see men mounting upon men and women mounting upon women before the onlookers. When Prophet Lut (as) was sent to warn them, they turned against him.

“And there was no answer from his people except that they said: Turn them out of your town. Verily they are a people who want to purify (themselves)”.

Then the Divine intervention came…….

“And We rained down upon them a shower (of stones). See then as to what was the end of the criminals”.

QUESTION:

Why does Islam condemn homosexuality when research today has shown that it is ‘inborn tendency’ ?

Firstly, research is a continuous process. Today it will tell you one thing and tomorrow something else in contrast. We can therefore not believe in it especially if it is contradicting Quran & Hadeeth.

Secondly, how can homosexuality be ‘inborn tendency’ when not a single man, before the people of Prophet Lut(as) had indulged in it. Quran explicitly says that Prophet Lut (as) had told his people: “Do you commit a lewdness which no one has ever done in the worlds before you?” If it was an ‘inborn tendency’, then atleast someone should have done it before.

Thirdly, even if we assume that homosexuality is an ‘inborn tendency’, why did then Allah (SWT), who is the Creator of everyone, destroy the people who practiced it? Is this Justice of God that He Himself creates men in a certain pattern and then punishes them for it? This certainly does not make any sense!

According to Islam, Sodomy is a horrible crime and it is worse than Zinaa.

Imam Ja’ffar as-Sadiq (as) said: Certainly Allah destroyed a complete nation (people of Lut) because they indulged in sodomy. Allah has not destroyed even one man for adultery”.                (Wasael ash-Shia’h)

Imam Ali ar-Ridha (as) said: “Refrain from adultery and sodomy, and this sodomy is worse than adultery. These two sins are the causes of seventy two (72) ills of this life and the Hereafter”.              (Fiqh ar-Ridha)

Just imagine I read it twice. While I am not as accomplished on this issue, I match with your determinations because they create sense. Thanks and goodluck to you.

The three reasons you have given to the question of, what are the actual reasons for homosexuality being condemned in Islam, really need to be elaborated on. I understand that that is what is written in the Quran and I fully believe it, but surely there is a more detailed and academic answer to what the reasons of the condemnation are. We live in a society where speaking out against homosexuality is labelled discrimination and anti-gay statements/behaviour are seriously frowned upon. There is so much ‘research’ mounting up to support ‘gay-rights’ in the West, so when Muslims defiantly claim to be against the act of homosexuality, and then we are questioned ‘why’ and we are required to provide not only a logical, but a factual and academic explanation, we cannot simply say “because it is not natural and not an inborn tendency”. We would look silly for not providing any evidence to our claims, and risk being dismissed as a non-credible, uneducated and ignorant people. Especially when pro-gay people defend gay rights by providing many facts and evidences, and are able to argue the opposite to everything we say with more factual arguments.
I am definitely not saying that they must be right. I do not personally condone homosexuality by any means. But I am saying that we Muslims need more education (including scientific education) on the REASONS of WHY homosexuality is ‘unnatural’, ‘indecent’, and a sin. If we are not fully educated on the reasons, and we are not equipped to be able to support our own arguments fully, then we are not considered credible enough to have an opinion, and we are not equipped to fight what we believe to be an abomination, and neither are we equipped to support and help (to bring them to the right way) those who are confused. An uneducated society cannot possibly fight an ‘educated’ opposition. Therefore, we NEED more education on the reasons, we NEED more education and academic explanations on the implications and outcomes the open practice of homosexuality can or will have on society.
I have been searching and searching and am yet to come across anything that explains why. I mean, we get it that it’s a sin and all that. We get it already! Who doesn’t know that by now (that Islam condemns it)?! But the WHY is more important considering the times we are living in! Help!
